2010 Ontario Senior Games - Actifest

Dear Ernie,

Welcome to the first edition of the 2010 Ontario Senior Games - Actifest online newsletter. Our Games Organizing Committee (GOC) hopes that you will find the information contained in this publication interesting and valuable. You'll notice that every issue will be slightly different than the previous one. We will feature photographs of seniors within the Province who live, play and promote the Actifest slogan 'Achieving Through Active Living'.

Our first edition is graced with a photograph of Helene Daleman from Durham Region who has been a member of the Oshawa OSCC for the past 5 years. Helene leads a very active lifestyle by playing tennis, golfing, swimming, and attending regular exercise classes. Helene can often be found playing a mean game of street hockey with her grandsons ages 8 and 4. This past summer she posted her first 100K cycling ride in Ohio - 'This is the best time of my life. Freed of responsibilities, and sound of body and mind, the world is my oyster. It does not get any better than this'.  Congratulations, Helene on being selected to represent our first edition of the Actifest 2010 online publication.

Send us your photographs to include in future newsletter editions or to post on our website photo gallery.  Photos may be sent to gamesmanager@actifest.com.

Ontario Senior Games Winterfest 2009

ntarionior Ga.DISTRICT 22 DOES WELL AT WINTERFEST 2009

  • Pictured from left are Jim Couch, Shirley Glauser, Ernie Hudson, Irene McCarrol, Aubrey Smith, Steve Potter, Gertrude Press, and Rick Crawford. (Absent: Al and Auldine Gordon, Jane Binkley, Ted Reinholdt)

Winterfest 2009 was recently held in the Brockville, Gananoque area during mid February. This is an event held every two years and provides an opportunity for anyone 55 years and older to compete in ten different sports. There were about 850 competitors from all over the Province.

Three of the twelve members of District 22’s (Ancaster, Dundas, Stoney Creek, Flamborough) team medaled. Ernie Hudson won gold in alpine skiing in the giant slalom in the men’s 55-64 age group. In the 3000 metre prediction skate Aubrey Smith won a bronze in the same age group. Jane Binkley also won a bronze in the women’s prediction skate for women 55-64. Both Jane and Aubrey were well under a minute difference from their predicted time and actual time. Jim Couch in the men’s Nordic 5k prediction skiing also did well.

In prediction event’s, you predict the time it will take you to complete the required distance. No timing devices are allowed on the competitors. Judges time each individual and the closest to the predicted time wins so speed is not important. The winners are usually just a few seconds off their predicted time.

Rick Crawford and Gertrude Press also did well in the 55+ mixed badminton. Al and Auldine Gordon also were entered in alpine skiing in the GS event.

The curling team of Shirley Glauser, Ted Reinholdt, Irene McCarrol and Steve Potter in their   first game gave the eventual gold medal team a really tough battle, losing a close one.

Winterfest 2009 is a great time to meet others from all areas of Ontario. The next competition is to be held in 2011, the location to be announced.

District 22 is looking to increase the size of the team for the next Winterfest. During the month of May we are holding our district games. We are always looking for people interested in having fun and meeting others from the area. For more information contact the Ancaster Senior Centre at 905 648 3466.
