2009 SENIOR REGIONAL GAMES

On Wednesday, August 19th participants from District 22 (Ancaster, Dundas, Stoney Creek & Flamborough) and District 23 (Hamilton) traveled to Brantford (District 25) to participate in the Regional Senior Games.  This event is held every two years and is open to gold and silver medal winners from the three districts.

The events offered this year were 5-pin Bowling, Golf, darts, 4-handed Bid Euchre, Euchre, Duplicate Bridge and cribbage.  This mix of events gives everyone a chance to participate either in a physical competition or the more cerebral activities.

District 22 sent a total of 48 participants and was well represented in all seven events.   There were 135 registrants for the one-day event from all three Districts.

In Golf (Men’s Flight A) Ken Boyko won gold.  Men’s Flight B was won by Bill Stewart.  In Men’s Calloway, Ted Reinholdt won gold with Bob Harris coming in 2nd.  Paul Jeppesen took 3rd place in Men’s Calloway.  Our ladies also did well with Wilma Jeppesen taking 2nd in 0-26 and Shirley Glauser taking 2nd in Women’s Calloway.

In cards, Reby Jerome and Emily Moning won gold in 4-handed Bid Euchre.  District 22 also did well in Duplicate Bridge with the team of Jack Lynch and Doug Boughner (North, South) and Earl Haystead and George Koppesen (East, West) winning gold.  Eleanor Smith and Susan Comley (North, South) and Kay Sundin and Judy Langton (East, West) came in 2nd.

To become active in Senior Games, the only criterion is age.  You have to 55 years or older.  You do not have to belong to a Senior Centre.  District 22 is always looking for more participants.  To get more information on Senior Games, there are 2 web sites:  www.infoflam.on.ca/seniorgames or www.ontarioseniorgames.ca  Senior Games has been described as one of Ontario’s best kept secrets.  It is a lot of fun and hopefully, it won’t be a secret much longer.

Congratulations to District 25 for putting on a great day.!

DISTRICT 22 WRAPS UP 2009 SUMMER GAMES

On Thursday, June 18th District 22 held their closing banquet at the Dundas Community Centre for all the gold, silver and bronze winners.  The summer games are open to anyone 55 years of age and older.

This year the Senior Games had 290 individuals participate in events, with a total of 202 registrations.  Individuals could participate in more than one event.  Fourteen events were offered during the month of May.  The card games included Contract Bridge, Duplicate Bridge, Euchre, Bid Euchre - Doubles, Bid Euchre – Triples and Cribbage.  Shuffleboard, Darts, Men’s and Women’s Golf, 5-pin Bowling, Lawn Bowling, Prediction Cycling – 10 km, and 3 km Prediction Walking rounded off the games.

In the Prediction Cycling, Jim Couch was just 21 seconds off his prediction, winning the event.  The competitors aren’t allowed any timing devices and are individually timed by stopwatch.  Considering the 10 km distance, and the fact that there was an extremely strong wind blowing, it is remarkable that he completed the course that accurately.

Prior to the Banquet, Wilma Jeppesen received an invitation from the Ontario Senior Games Association to compete for District 22 in the 2010 Canada Senior Games, due to her Silver Medal in the Provincial Senior Games held last summer in London, Ontario.  Aubrey Smith will also represent our District in the Canada Senior Games on the strength of his Gold Medal win in the 50 metre Sprint in the pool.  The Canada Games are to be held in Brockville, Ontario in August 2010.

District 22 has done well in the Provincial Games over the past few years.  In the Winter Provincial Senior Games 3 of our 12 competitors medaled with 1 gold medal in Downhill Skiing and 2 bronze medals in Prediction Skating.

On August 19th, Brantford is hosting a 1-day event called the Regional Games.  This event is open to any gold and silver winners in the 3 districts; District 22 (Ancaster, Dundas & Area), District 23 (Hamilton) and District 25 (Brantford).  The Games include 5-pin Bowling, 18-hole Golf, 4-handed Bid Euchre, Cribbage, Darts, Duplicate Bridge and Progressive Euchre.  We should have a strong team at this event.

The goal of the Senior Games is to provide older adults (55+) with the opportunity to increase social interaction and physical well-being, maintain and enhance their psychological and mental wellness through participation in recreational activities and sports and perhaps most importantly, having fun.

If you wish to learn more about Senior Games, we would very much like to hear from you.  You can log onto www.ontarioseniorgames.ca, or District 22’s website, www.infoflam.on.ca/seniorgames.  You can also phone the Ancaster Senior Achievement Centre at (905)648-3466.

Ontario Senior Games Winterfest 2009

ntarionior Ga.DISTRICT 22 DOES WELL AT WINTERFEST 2009

  • Pictured from left are Jim Couch, Shirley Glauser, Ernie Hudson, Irene McCarrol, Aubrey Smith, Steve Potter, Gertrude Press, and Rick Crawford. (Absent: Al and Auldine Gordon, Jane Binkley, Ted Reinholdt)

Winterfest 2009 was recently held in the Brockville, Gananoque area during mid February. This is an event held every two years and provides an opportunity for anyone 55 years and older to compete in ten different sports. There were about 850 competitors from all over the Province.

Three of the twelve members of District 22’s (Ancaster, Dundas, Stoney Creek, Flamborough) team medaled. Ernie Hudson won gold in alpine skiing in the giant slalom in the men’s 55-64 age group. In the 3000 metre prediction skate Aubrey Smith won a bronze in the same age group. Jane Binkley also won a bronze in the women’s prediction skate for women 55-64. Both Jane and Aubrey were well under a minute difference from their predicted time and actual time. Jim Couch in the men’s Nordic 5k prediction skiing also did well.

In prediction event’s, you predict the time it will take you to complete the required distance. No timing devices are allowed on the competitors. Judges time each individual and the closest to the predicted time wins so speed is not important. The winners are usually just a few seconds off their predicted time.

Rick Crawford and Gertrude Press also did well in the 55+ mixed badminton. Al and Auldine Gordon also were entered in alpine skiing in the GS event.

The curling team of Shirley Glauser, Ted Reinholdt, Irene McCarrol and Steve Potter in their   first game gave the eventual gold medal team a really tough battle, losing a close one.

Winterfest 2009 is a great time to meet others from all areas of Ontario. The next competition is to be held in 2011, the location to be announced.

District 22 is looking to increase the size of the team for the next Winterfest. During the month of May we are holding our district games. We are always looking for people interested in having fun and meeting others from the area. For more information contact the Ancaster Senior Centre at 905 648 3466.
