The Legal Aid System and what can be expected from Legal Aid Clinics are often misinterpreted.

The Ontario Legal Aid plan is administered through the law society of Upper Canada on behalf of the Ministry of the Attorney General.  Its aim is to provide lawyers in civil and criminal matters to people who cannot afford to pay on their own.  You must apply and submit to a financial assessment before you receive any financial or legal support.

The Ontario Legal Aid plan also finances Legal Aid Clinics in the province.

To be eligible, a single person's income must be less than $18,000, and a family's income must be less than $26,000.

The following is a list of the kinds of things the advice lawyer can help you with:

  • Advice on legal questions and concerns.  For example. filing for bankruptcy, debt, proceedings under power of sale, guardianship, powers of attorney, separation and divorce.
  • Advice on preparing court documents, particularly when you need to go to family court.
  • Assistance with swearing affidavits required for public housing or student assistance.
  • Reviewing documents.  For example, small claims court statements of claim, separation agreements, divorce petitions, and change of name applications.
