What We Accomplished

Parenting Programs. Two programs were offered.

Mindful Parents- for parents of children age 2 to 7: What does it mean to be mindful? What is a mindful parent? All of us who are in the prime of parenting, at times find ourselves in situations that feel overwhelming or frustrating. The reality is that there are so many demands on us that sometimes it becomes difficult to enjoy and focus on what the parenting experience can really be like.

The purpose of this workshop was to enhance your parenting skills; focus on communication and explore/define what your relationship "can" be as your child grows. We looked at ages and stages of child development, what behaviors are appropriate and which are not and look at our expectations of our children. We also looked at bullying/self esteem, stimulating their creativity and healthy attachments that promote security and well adjusted children (and so much more).

Parent Action – Parents of pre-teens/teens: A unique class specifically designed for parents of youth aged 11 up to 18 years old to address the issues, joys and struggles around this age group. Many parents of children in their pre-teen years and into their teens are experiencing some frustrations, difficulties and issues that you as a parent have never had to deal with before. Our program focused on you, the parent to assist you in supporting your role as a parent of teenagers. We worked to help enhance your parenting skills with the tools to deal with parent/teen issues of communication, anger, frustration, stresses, bullying, respect, "talking back", attitude, consistency and the "8 worst things parents can do!" and much more. We gave some insights into your teen that perhaps you have never thought of before. These classes were in an informal and intimate format (Small groups) so that parents can share among each other, some of their parenting tips, concerns and issues around being a parent. Sometimes as parents we feel that we are the only ones going through it, and sometimes it is a struggle. As parents of pre-teens and teens, you are no longer the parent...you are their guidance counsellor.

New Youth Centre

CAP, the Flamborough Family YMCA and the Rotary Club of Waterdown and Hamilton partnered together to create a youth drop-in centre for youth aged 10 to 15 years old. It is located at Memorial Hall on Fridays (on designated dates) beginning in September 2006. It's a place for youth to "hang out" in a healthy, supervised environment with programs and activities specifically geared to that age range. There are age appropriate movies, quiet areas and active areas for physical play (soccer, basketball, floor hockey, etc). Food is also offered at a minimal cost.

Flamborough Community Meetings

Communities throughout Flamborough are becoming pro-active in taking charge of crime in their neighbourhoods with prevention in mind. CAP can help you organize a meeting in your community with our local police officers to address your communities needs. Contact the CAP office 905-689-7880 for details.
