Hot Issues for Flamborough

Waterdown’s new SKATE PARK
Waterdown has a new Skate park, which is fully functional. Drive by any time of the day or night (lights go out at 11:00pm) and you will find the skate park crowded with kids and adults showing off their talents on their bikes and skateboards. Overall, we have found the skate park a great place for our youth to hang out, meet friends new and old, in a safe environment. It is very visible from the roadway to deter any "questionable" behaviour and well lit. Skate parks come with their own risks, but looking at other much larger cities with skate parks, contrary to what some people believe, it is a safe environment for kids to use and hang out. The perception is that having a skate park will bring out the "hoodlums" of a neighbourhood, and the so-called "undesirables". This definitely is a myth and not fact, brought on by someone's limited opinion and a lack of understanding youth and their needs. I encourage you to visit the Waterdown Skate park and see some of our very talented skateboarders. They are truly amazing! It is keeping our kids safe and off the streets!

Directions to the park: The park is located at 200 Hamilton St. N. Waterdown.   Turn north at the corner of #5 Hwy ( Dundas St.) and Hamilton St. ( also known as Centre Rd.)  The park is two blocks on your right, across from Fortinos Plaza.

Flamborough's new Youth Centre

Flamborough Information & Community Services in Waterdown, along with other community partners, such as the Flamborough Family YMCA, Waterdown Rotary Club, Interact Club at Waterdown District High School and the City of Hamilton. These partners have met to develop a program for youth that will take place at Memorial Hall on Friday evenings from 6-9pm,on designated dates. The YMCA is offering their leadership in providing staff to ensure that the program will be interesting and safe for kids. The Interact students, under the guidance of the Rotary Club will be involved in supervising and relationship building.

The Centre offers a good mixture of activities such as floor hockey, ping-pong and pool tables, videos and quiet stations for crafts, etc. One of the more attractive activities "according to youth" is the Xbox. Of course there is food available at a nominal cost. Check the Flamborough Review for ongoing information and dates.

If you are interested in donating financially to keep this youth centre going, please contact the FICS office at 905-689-7880 for details. Our youth centre is funded solely by a small start up grant. We are counting on the generosity of community members and businesses. Businesses do not have to be located in Flamborough to be a contributor to the Youth Centre. FICS will be happy to provide you a letter to hand your company explaining various donation options and the purpose of our youth centre. Please contribute generously to assist our youth in making positive choices in life. It affects us all!

Lighting & Security at Tim Hortons & Sobeys

Since an attack on a youth behind the Tim Hortons and Sobeys in Waterdown back in December 2005, there has been quick action by concerned community members, Sobeys and Tim Hortons owners. There is new lighting and camera surveillance devices in the plaza to deter "potential" criminal activity in the future.
